As I said earlier: the "perfect" Otis release was something I really wanted to do. We had quite a few different tapes to work from. After figuring out what might have been released previously and what worked best for this release I started work on those tapes in particular. One of the things I wanted to do was make the Stockholm material sing sassy. I always hated the way the Swingin' Pig version sounded flat and lifeless - especially considering that there was obviously a GREAT Otis show there. The tracks at the beginning of the disc (which Big P came up with) did not require all that much work so I got those out of the way and concentrated on the rest. After about 4 weeks and 100 hours of work I was very very pleased with the results and - this is the only time I ever did this - I sent a copy of the completed master to Big P to get his opinion. Then I played the master for some soul fanatic aquaintances as well to get their opinions. Everybody felt that this was something that was monumental. I sent a bunch of artwork to Tracey and told her she had free reign and should design a few covers and I'd pick the one I liked best. She sent me 4 variations of the cover and I combined 2 of them and sent it to the Japanese. They were stunned by the disc. In my opinion this is the best Otis release - official or unofficial - you can get. If anybody out there that were unfamiliar with him needed to hear just one cd by him I would choose this one. Why Atlantic cannot issue something on par with this is beyond me. Surely they would have 100 times the material (compared to the small handful of stuff I had access to) to choose from in their vaults so that they could easily issue an Otis cd of unreleased material that would rival this one - why haven't they?

This was another one I upped to STG back in November of 2003 and it just blew up like the bomb it is. I think it ran for over a year, topping 2,000 downloads. It probably remained on the tracker until the site eventually died, taking the torrent with it. In this soul fanatic's opinion, Durian and Big P completely succeeded in creating the ultimate live Otis release, I can't count how many times I've played it. Otis was truly an electrifying performer with tremendous stage presence and he is arguably the greatest male vocalist of all time in the soul/r&b genre.

I messed around with a graphics program this morning and fixed a couple of minor errors with the back cover artwork file - the spine read "Siul", it now reads "Soul". Track 8 read "Satisfaction", but it's actually "Respect" so I fixed that too. Anyone who wants the fixed cover art only should direct their bt client to dl the file named "Otis Redding Soupcon of Soul-bc". This torrent also includes a scan of the disc label that's likely not previously circulated for anybody who wants it - "Otis Redding Soupcon of Soul-disc" is that file name.

Also, before anyone asks, the title is not a typo. Soupçon (pronounced sūp'sŏn') is a french word meaning "a little bit" or "small amount". I think it's ok within the text info, but I've labeled the flac files, folder and torrent file "Soupcon" (not "Soupçon") since odd characters or unrecognized symbols can wreak havoc with some torrent makers, trackers and bit torrent clients, causing unexpected error messages.

Finally, thanks again to durian1 and Big P for making this collection available.

The standard ethical appeals apply to all offers -

1) Continue seeding after DL
2) Trade/Share freely
3) Never for sale
4) No lossy distribution
5) Enjoy thoroughly!

Much Thanks !! Any chance of some Sam Cooke ??

I can't think about classic soul singers without thinking about Sam Cooke either. the only live SC I have is on old vinyl...the "Live at the Copa 7/8/64" and "Harlem Square Club '63" - both are great and both are available commercially on cd. "The Great 1955 Shrine Concert" was released on Specialty in 1993 but I've never heard it - that's all the live Sam Cooke I know of.

Thanks for your response, I have all 3 of those shows and was just hoping that there was something else out there. The 1955 Shrine concert being the last one I picked up on the excellent box set they released of Sam's music. It includes alternate takes and is worth twice the price.

Do you think you'll be able to get us some Tina?

Ike and Tina made it onto BF-025, the final Big 'Fro release. it's probably not coming for a couple weeks at least, but we will be getting there. I've got a few Soul Train appearances that sound great, I seeded them before (at dimeadozen like over a year ago) with a short Al Green '74 set to fill out a disc. maybe I'll up them if I can find them...nothing like a good old fashioned soul-fest. I just got a 2cd unknown daud source Aretha Franklin 7/7/89 from a friend that I was thinking about transferring. the sound's not great (A-/B+ range) but live Aretha's hard to come by and it is a pretty good show. Peabo Bryson guests on a few songs which I could live without though...."Tonight, I Celebrate My Love"...blechh.

one of these days I'll get around to buying that box set, I bet it's really good. I've got a cd of The Soul Stirrers with Sam Cooke, Paul Foster and Julius Cheeks from the Specialty Legends of Gospel Series 1992, that's another great early SC collection.

ps. anyone who's looking for a fresh funky old school soul dynamite revival should check out the Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings in Tallahassee FL 2/11/06 torrent running at bt.etree and at dime right now...it's slammin'.

Hi bcc

Thanks for a great seed - really enjoyed it - only one problem:

Track 16 "My Girl" ends abruptly. All tracks pass their MD5. Can you check your seed please, and if you have the complete track anywhere, please reseed!

hi alex, I just checked my seed and my source disc and I can't find any problem. track 16 should be 2:41 long and 17.6 mb large. the last beat of My Girl is the first beat of the next song Shake. I think that's how it was played in concert, they just launched abruptly into the next tune.

sometimes with these old soul revues they'd blast through a short set of hits and some would be abbreviated versions. I've tried generating setlists for Solomon Burke shows, for example, and he'll typically sing part of a hit and move on - sometimes it seems the whole thing is a big medley. your sense that the song was shortened is probably right, but it's deliberate I'm pretty sure.

it's possible I'm missing something, does anyone else hear a problem between t16 and t17?

Cool that you are able to fix the covers - it never even occured to me to ask if that was something you could do when you posted these!

Final minor cover note: Tracey did the actual art, then the Japanese added the spines and the small stuff on the bottom of the back covers ('Fro logo etc).

And good that you caught the mistitled song - I never even noticed that when I checked/proofread her art before passing it along to the Japanese and never even knew there was a mistitled song on the cover until reading your part of the torrent description just now!

there's not much rare Otis around that I know of. I have the unreleased Whiskey a Go Go sets from April of '66 (I think the release was recorded March 31st - the sets are definitely different). they're soundboads, but a bit more muddy sounding than the Big 'Fro sources, maybe due to multiple analog gens? someone could probably clean them up and remaster them, but I don't have any good programs or cultivated skills in that area. I only got the discs 4 or 5 months ago and I'd like to compare notes with someone else who has them - mine has a dropout or two and if there's copies around with no dropouts, I shouldn't circulate these. if I knew mine were typical copies, I'd be more apt to share them. if anyone else has these shows, please pm me.

This compilation has great material but at least one of the listed sources here is inaccurate. For example, "A Hard Day's Night" is not from a '67 Birmingham, AL, show but rather straight off one of the live @ the Whisky-a-go-go albums. I've got the record album plus the same take used on Atlantic/Atco's _The Definitive Otis Redding_ (disc 4's "ultimate live O.R. show"), even the same comments by Otis leading into the track. Same with (I think) "Can't Turn You Loose" which was on the original _In Person at the Whisky-a-Go-Go_ release. So in answer to the question, "Why haven't they [released this quality stuff from the Atco vault]?", they already have. I assume the rest of the other pristine quality tracks in the opening "set" of this compilation are also from the same company releases.

I got that part of the disc from big p.

As far as the absolute accuracy of your comments you yourself says:

"Same with (I think) "Can't Turn You Loose" "

So right there you are making an accusation without even being 100% certain about it yourself! If even you as the accuser cannot 100% absolutely commit to the statements you are making then why make them in the first place?

As far as

" even the same comments by Otis leading into the track. "

That means very little as tons of musicians use - word for word - the same intros etc night after night (example try finding ANY late 70's/early 80's Kinks show, for example, where Ray does not do the exact same "Lola" tease throughout the show with the exact same comments night after night after night). And with soul artists especially - those shows were more often than not rehearsed to the last rimshot and 99% of anything that appeared spontaneous was just extremely well rehearsed "spontanaity" to appear as such - which on the one hand was part of what made classic soul so great: the artists were so professional and well rehearsed yet could make you believe that a comment they had just made, or a shout placed at just the right point of the song........ or even a "take it to the bridge" would appear to be a totally spontaneous moment that only the show you were seeing/hearing at that very moment was the one time this magical event would occur. Soul artists were really the antithesis of jam bands yet they could give the illusion of off the cuff spontanauty just like the best of the GOOD jam bands. Hence my problems putting together an Ike and Tina fro release - i had a number of tapes to work with but quality wise (sound and performance) beyond any audience noise that might have leaked into the mic's onstage, IF any audience sounds could be heard at all to begin with once the songs started, these shows were to my ears all but 100% identical to the point where the audience sounds were the ONLY thing that distinguished one show from another. Neither Ike nor Tina would utter one syllable or play one note from one show to the next that was not 100% previously rehearsed ahead of time!

Now........... COULD it be from the Whiskey? Sure. Anything is possible. But then again Big P seemed to have a ton more expertise at the soul end of the bootleg spectrum than I ever would have had and if he had those as being from Atlanta then that's how he would have received them years prior to ever knowing me. And I am very certain he would never have sent me anything intentionally mislabeled. I trust that guy's judgement over anybody else's where all things soul and funk are concerned. He knows his shit like nobody else I have ever known.

And in closing for whatever it is worth: I do however find it extremely odd that of all the Otis fanatics that have downloaded this over the years not one of them has ever brought this up before - you'd think out of the thousands and thousands out there that have heard these tracks SOMEBODY would have mentioned this months or years ago? I do not know you nor do I mean to insult you but come on: You are the ONLY Otis fan out there who has ever heard these tracks who's ears are so magical that they can hear something that nobody else in the land of Otis-dom has been able to hear in the 3 or 4 years since this disc first came out?

I was only pointing out what appeared to be a discrepancy between the posted track information and what I've found to be otherwise. I'm not ungrateful for the music nor
am I complaining. I love the music. I've been listening to Otis since I was in h.s. in
'66-'68. After listening repeatedly to the first four tracks of this download, (which appear to be from the same source) and going back to _Otis Redding Recorded Live: Previously Unreleased Performances_ which I have on LP and the box set _The Definitive Otis Redding_, there is no question that two of those four tracks are from the '66 Whisky-a-go-go tapes (instead of '67 Birmingham, AL). Both "Your One and Only Man" (noted as "Destiny" on the LP) and "A Hard Day's Night" are the same recordings
as on both the LP and the box set. The crowd noise and comments, Otis's comments,
and the wave forms match exactly. Just listen to the LP and/or the cd. I'm not questioning the honesty of the kind folks who have offered this beautiful music. I wasn't trying to provoke a pissing match. I only pointed out what I heard. Period. Having said that, I'm now hitting the play button on my cd player and getting off again on Mr. Pitiful as I have so many times through the years. Cheers. garcialb

First of all I want to say how much I've appreciated both the Big Fro releases, and then their being seeded here. I hope you guys keep them coming - even after the strange Booker T thread closure.

But I found this reply to be a bit harsh. So I figured I'd try and settle the matter. If it's really the same tape, it should be pretty easy to find out. So take a listen to this (http://home.comcast.net/~johnedward/otistest.mp3).

Left channel = Soupcon of Soul
Right channel = Otis 4CD box, Disc 4
(no speed correction or other editing - except to start them at the same point)

The bad news - they're identical. The spoken intro, and the music sync up perfectly. That's simply impossible to do over two separate shows. There's no question these are the same performance.

The good news - the box set is edited - Soupcon is more than two minutes longer. That's probably why nobody spotted it earlier (I don't know if the original "Whiskey" release was edited or not.)

I haven't tried this with any other tracks.

While 85% of our torrents as of an hours ago came over to the new tracker, a few are being fussy and this is one of them. The only solution for this at this time is for someone to re-hash the torrent with our new announce url and re-attach it to this thread.
